1869 Indian Head Penny The 1869 Indian Head Penny has risen to the ranks of being one of the top ten most sought after editions of this coin simply because so few have survived the years. Even in poor condition, collectors want to get their hands on these coins in order to help complete their collections. 1869 Indian Head cents are scarce issues that were struck in a relatively tiny small number – much smaller than than any previous standard Indian Head date. This fact alone makes the 1869 penny a very challenging coin to find, especially in a choice, original condition. The 1869/9 (9 Over 9 RPD) Indian Head Cent (Penny) is a Repunched Date error.
Proofs were struck each year as well. The series contains no great rarities, and the only major variety is an 1860 cent on which the Indian’s bust is pointed, rather than rounded.
